Why So Many Of The World's Greatest Soccer Players Wear #10

$
0
0

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi wears no. 10.

Neymar wears no. 10.

Wayne Rooney wears no. 10.

Recent winners of the Ballon d'Or, given to the best player in the world, include Michael Owen, Kaká, and Ronaldinho, all of whom wore no. 10.

Part of the reasoning for the popularity of the no. 10 goes back to Diego Maradona and Pelé, two of the greatest players that ever lived. They both wore no. 10, so it would be a natural extension for many of today's best players to choose that number.

But there is actually more to it than that and it starts with why both Maradona and Pelé wore the greatest of football numbers.

When players were first assigned numbers, the starting 11 were given numbers 1-11 with the goalkeeper wearing no. 1, the defenders wearing the next lowest numbers, and the forwards wearing the biggest numbers.

This is much the same reason that single digits are so popular in baseball. When numbers were first assigned it was based on their position in the batting order. Thus Babe Ruth wore no. 3 and Lou Gehrig wore no. 4, for example.

The most common formation used by soccer teams when numbering started was 2-3-5, that is two defenders, three midfielders, and five forwards. The players were assigned numbers based on these positions.

Soccer Numbers

Over time, teams moved away from the 2-3-5 and the 4-4-2 became more popular. Teams tried to retain the original numbering as much as possible.

The nos. 4 and 5 became the center backs, with the nos. 2 and 3 moving wide. In addition, the no. 7 and 11, wingers in the original formation, remained wingers in the new formation, only now they are in the midfield.

The switch looked like this:

Now positions were numbered like this, with nos. 9 and 10 being assigned to the two forwards.

Soccer numbers

Traditionally, one of these players would be better all-around player, a scorer and a playmaker, and that player was most often assigned no. 10.

Thus Pelé and Maradona wore no. 10 and many of the best all-around players have followed..

The other player has traditionally been more of a straight scorer, a striker.

Because of this, the no. 9 is also a popular number among the great players, including Luis Suarez for Uruguay and Robin van Persie of Netherlands.

Of course, today, teams no longer strictly adhere to the numbering system. It is done more out of tradition or respect to the greats with players often choosing numbers greater than 11. David Beckham wore no. 23 with the Los Angeles Galaxy, for example.

Curiously, Landon Donovan wore no. 10 for the United States. That number has now been assigned to Mix Diskerud, a midfielder.

Lionel Messi's Gorgeous Stoppage Time Goal Destroyed Iran's World Cup Hopes

After 90 minutes it looked like Iran was going to pull of a huge upset with a scoreless tie that would have kept their World Cup hopes alive. But in the first minute of stoppage time, Lionel Messi dashed those dreams with a gorgeous goal from distance.

Iran still has a shot to advance to the knockout stage. But now they need a huge upset win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final match and even that might not be enough. If they had tied Argentina, Iran could have potentially moved on with just a tie in their final match.

Iran was actually the better side in the second half with several good scoring opportunities. But Messi final found some space and curled the ball into the back of the net with his always dangerous left foot.

Messi's shot came from 5 yards outside of the box.

Lionel Messi

Iran had two players on Messi and another seven players in the box desperately trying to keep the game scoreless.

Lionel Messi Goal

Much like Messi's goal in Argentina's first match, he never takes his eyes off the ball. He just knows where he is on the pitch and where the goal is.

Lionel Messi

The ball was just out of reach of the Iranian keeper.

And the celebration was on for the people of Argentina.

Not Everybody In Argentina Is Rooting For Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi

Before he was a star for Argentina at the World Cup and before he was 3-time winner of the FIFA Ballon d'Or, given to the world's best footballer, Lionel Messi played youth soccer for the Argentina powerhouse, Newell's Old Boys, based in his hometown of Rosario, Santa Fe.

It was there that Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency which ultimately led him to sign with Barcelona at the age of 13 when the Spanish club was willing to pay the $750 per month cost to treat Messi's condition.

Since Messi left Argentina when he was just 13, there are still some in his hometown that still refuse to root for him even as he leads the hopes of the entire country at the World Cup.

Wright Thompson of ESPN recently visited Rosario where he found a town with a strong passion for soccer and divided by the colors of Messi's Newell's Old Boys and their hated-crosstown-rival, Rosario Central.

A local doctor explained the feelings towards Messi.

"People from Newell's are expecting Messi to be the best," the doctor told Thompson. "People from Rosario Central are waiting for Messi to fail."

The doctor's 18-year-old son went further, explaining that supporters of Rosario Central "hate Messi." However, the doctor said "hate" was too strong, instead saying "They don't want Messi to be as important as he is."

Some locals also relayed a story to Jeff Himmelman of the New York Times about a recent match at Rosario Central's stadium when fans booed a picture of Messi in the national team's uniform on the scoreboard. The booing continued until the picture was taken down.

However, Messi is troublesome for even some of Newell's Old Boys supporters as he is described by Thompson as the "golden ticket" the club threw away because they were too cheap to pay his medical bills.

The disdain for Messi even extends outside of Rosario according to Himmelman. There are people in Argentina that are not fond of Messi because he left too soon and didn't play in Argentina's first division and that he "isn’t Argentine enough."

There is a lot of pressure on Messi to help Argentina win their first World Cup since 1986. But even if he succeeds, some will still not be happy for Messi, public enemy no. 1 to many in his own hometown.

This came just moments after the Nigerian keeper stopped a similar attempt by Messi with a great save.

Lionel Messi's First Team Let Him Leave Because They Didn't Want To Pay For His $1,500 Growth Defect Medicine

Lionel Messi

At age 27, Lionel Messi is already one of the best players of all time.

With an upset win over Germany in the World Cup final at the Maracana on Sunday, he'll become a national hero in a country that has been notoriously reluctant to embrace him as one of their own.

Part of that reluctance is based on the assumption that he's more Spanish than Argentinian. He left Rosario, Argentina, at age 13 and has lived in Barcelona ever since.

The reason he left, though, might have more to do with his first club than with Messi himself.

In a 2010 Sports Illustrated profile, S.L. Price reported that Messi began taking growth hormones that cost $1,500 for a 45-day cycle at age 11. He was playing with the youth team of a club called Newell's Old Boys at the time. When he was 13, Messi's dad's company stopped covering the cost of the medicine.

According to Price, the Messi family asked the club to cover the medicine. Newell's made a few $500 payments and then stopped. The Messis looked for a new club, and Barcelona stepped in and agreed to pay for the medicine if Leo signed with them. Messi moved to Spain, and the rest is history.

It's one of the worst sports moves of all time. If Newell's simply paid for the medicine, they could have sold Messi for a monster price once he came of age.

The club maintains that it gave the Messi family $8,000 for the medicine, according to Price. The former president even carries around some wrinkled receipts that allegedly prove the payments were made, Price reports. But ESPN's Wright Thompson, who did a big story on Messi, saw the receipts and says they "seem like forgeries" designed to save the club from the embarrassment of losing Messi over a few thousand dollars.

Germany Wins The World Cup With A Goal In The 113th Minute

mario gotze goal

In a game full of missed opportunities, substitute Mario Gotze controlled a cross with his chest, poked a shot at the goalkeeper, and won the 2014 World Cup for Germany with a 113th-minute goal.

The final score line: Germany 1, Argentina 0 in extra time.

Germany is the first European team to win a World Cup on South American soil. It's their fourth title.

The Gotze goal that won it:

gotze win

It will be a game that haunts Argentina for a long, long time. Both teams had multiple chances, but none of them were finished until Gotze's poke with seven minutes to play.

It could have been different.

Gonzalo Higuain found himself all alone in front of the goal in the 21st minute, but ripped a shot well wide of the goal. A few minutes later, Higuain put it in the back of the net and ran around celebrating before realizing the offside flag was up.

A few minutes before the halftime whistle, Germany's Benedikt Howedes had a free header 6 yards from goal and bashed it against the post.

The second half lacked the excitement of the first, but the chances still came. Lionel Messi tried to go far post with his left foot — the type of goal we've seen him score again and again for Barcelona — but curled it wide. Later German'y Toni Kroos ran onto a perfect pass at the top of the box and skimmed it wide.

In extra time, Rodrigo Palacio had a chance to chip Manuel Neuer but popped it up and out of play.

After the Gotze goal, Argentina's chances ran out.

Messi had a free kick in the 122nd minute from about 40 yards out. It would have been one of the great goals of all time. But, it went over the bar.

This was Germany's World Cup. They were the best, most complete team in the tournament, and that 7-1 win over Brazil was one of the best single performances in World Cup history.

Lionel Messi Keeps Throwing Up During Matches, And No One Can Figure Out Why

messi throwing up germany world cup

In the latest in a series of strange vomiting incidents, Lionel Messi threw up during Sunday's World Cup final loss to Germany.

It was caught by an Italian TV broadcaster, and confirmed by the Associated Press.

This happens to Messi with some regularity. In April cameras captured the 26-year-old retching in the tunnel before a game against Athletic Bilbao. That came a little more than a month after he threw up during an Argentina friendly against Romania in Bucharest.

That incident prompted a wave of media inquiries into what's going on with his stomach. While Messi, his coaches, and his doctors have thrown out a bunch of different theories, there isn't one clear explanation.

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino told the BBC back in March that Messi went to a doctor, but the tests didn't reveal anything:

"Something is not right, but it doesn't affect his performance. It happens to him regularly. ... He has even gone to see specialists at certain times but their tests have proved inconclusive."

Argentina's team doctor told Marca that it's nothing to worry about, and listed a bunch of possible explanations:

"One cause can be physical and/or mental strain. The change in time zones — jet lag — and changes in diet also take a toll. Sometimes when people change their eating habits, it can trigger intolerance, leading to nausea and vomiting."

Messi himself called it "no big deal," saying, "Sometimes I accelerate very fast and the change in air intake causes me to heave. I felt completely fine at the end of the match"

It appears to be a strange but harmless ailment, but it happens all the time.

Lionel Messi scored his 11th league goal of the season for Barcelona on Sunday in a 5-1 victory against Espanyol, and it was a beauty.

After a pass from Xavi at the end of the box, Messi took one touch and curved a low shot in the bottom corner while the entire defense converged on him.

Somehow, he slotted the shot through a gap between three defenders. The angle from behind shows how much curve he got on the ball, and how little space he had:

Lionel Messi has long wowed soccer fans with his insane ball control, corralling passes from every angle and bringing them gently under control.

A Japanese game show tried testing just how good Messi is by having him kick the ball over an 18-meter bar – about 60 feet – running underneath, and controlling it on the other side.

Sure enough, Messi twice kicks it easily over the bar, runs to the other side, and controls the ball without letting it hit the ground.

The Most Expensive Athlete In The World Is Valued At $260 Million

Lionel Messi

With the transfer window now open in many of the world's top soccer leagues, the CIES Football Observatory has released their semi-annual list of the most valuable football players in the world.

Lionel Messi of Barcelona in Spain's La Liga tops the list with a staggering transfer value of $262 million (€220 million) and nobody else is even close.

And that would just be the estimated cost of acquiring the rights to the Argentinean footballer. If a team were able to convince Barcelona to sell Messi, the new club would then have to negotiate a new contract with the player.

Messi reportedly makes slightly more than $50 million per year with his current contract at Barça.

There are a lot of valuable athletes in North America, and while this side of the Atlantic uses a different means of transferring players between teams, it is hard to imagine any team would pay $262 million for their rights and then give them a $50 million annual salary.

Messi's transfer value is calculated by examining transfer fees since 2009 and variables such as recent performance, age, position, current contract, and team performance.

For many of the world's top association football leagues, January marks the mid-season transfer window where clubs are given approximately one month to add players from international leagues.

Here is the rest of the top 10:

  1. Lionel Messi, Barcelona (Spain) — $262 million (€220 million)
  2. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid (Spain) — $158 million (€133 million)
  3. Eden Hazard, Chelsea (England) — $118 million (€99 million)
  4. Diego Costa, Chelsea (England) — $100 million (€84 million)
  5. Paul Pogba,  Juventus (Italy) — $86 million (€72 million)
  6. Sergio Agüero, Manchester City (England) — $77 million (€65 million)
  7. Raheem Sterling, Liverpool (England) — $75 million (€63 million)
  8. Francesc Fàbregas, Chelsea (England) — $74 million (€62 million)
  9. Alexis Sánchez, Arsenal (England) — $73 million (€61 million)
  10. Gareth Bale, Real Madrid (Spain) — $71 million (€60 million)

There Are Rumors That Lionel Messi Could Leave Barcelona After Feud With Coach Turns Ugly

lionel messi transfer

After he had an apparent falling out with coach Luis Enrique, there's speculation in Europe that Lionel Messi could leave Barcelona in a historic transfer.

As a general rule all Messi transfer rumors are to be taken with a grain of salt. For one thing there are only a handful of clubs in the entire world who could pay the estimated $600 million in buyout money and salary that it'd take to pry him from Barcelona.

But there are signs that this time is different.

Guillem Balague, the respected Spanish soccer journalist who wrote a book on Messi, said on Sky Sports that this is the closest he has ever come to leaving Barcelona.

"He has never been as close as this to leaving. That doesn’t mean he is going to leave," he said. "What I mean is that it’s a possibility that has not only entered his mind – Barcelona were thinking of selling him about six, seven months ago."

Messi was benched in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in La Liga. The benching came after he and Enrique had "a sharp exchange of words" at practice on Friday, according to ESPN's Graham Hunter. The day after the loss Messi didn't show up to training, saying he had gastroenteritis. According to reports out of Spain, Enrique wanted to punish the superstar for his absence but was ultimately talked out of it.

On the same day, the club fired its sporting director after he criticized the president, and his assistant — legendary defender Carlos Puyol — immediately quit.

In the midst of that chaos, Messi transfer rumors of all shapes and sizes started up. Messi started following Premier League club Chelsea and two of their players on Instagram:

messi chelsea instagram

As Paul Doyle of the Guardian wrote:

Some people believe they have seen face of Jesus in a piece of toast, some people hear coded instructions in Michael Jackson’s lyrics, and some people believe that if Lionel Messi follows Thibaut Courtois and Felipe Luís on Instagram, then the Argentinian tease is definitely on the verge of a move to Chelsea.

Manchester City's name has also been thrown out there.

PSG's name is in the mix as well, with fellow Argentine Javier Pastore telling the media, "If Messi were to leave Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain's owner will be right there to strike a deal. Money will not be a problem. The club has the resources to buy a number of Messis."

Messi, the most expensive player in the world, has been at Barcelona since he was 13. But now that Barcelona and Spain's golden generation of players are aging, these are different times.

Lionel Messi Makes Cryptic Statement About His Future With Barcelona Amid Feud With Coach

A day after squashing transfer rumors by saying he had no intention of leaving Barcelona, Lionel Messi told reporters in Zurich that he didn't know where he would be playing next year.

There are reports in Spain that Messi and coach Luis Enrique are feuding after the 27-year-old superstar was benched in a game against Real Sociedad and then skipped practice the next day.

Messi sent fans into a tizzy by following Chelsea on Instagram, and Spanish journalist Guillem Balague told Sky Sports that this was the closest Messi had ever come to leaving the club.

After Barca's comprehensive 3-1 win against Atletico Madrid over the weekend, Messi addressed the rumors. He said he never demanded that Enrique be fired, adding: "I don't demand anything for me to stay because I have no intention of leaving anywhere. I've heard stories I've spoken to Chelsea or City; that's all lies."

At the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich on Monday, Messi sounded far less insistent that he was staying at Barcelona. He told reporters when asked whether he would play for another club (via The Guardian):

I am not sure if I will go back to Newell's Old Boys one day. I am not sure where I will be next year. I have always said that I will end my career at Barcelona but as Cristiano said: 'Only God knows the future.' Things in football can change overnight.

Messi seems to be talking generally here, but it's still not exactly a strong commitment to the club.

Only a handful of clubs in the world can even afford to pay Messi's rumored $300 million buyout clause. His actually leaving Barcelona would be a huge shock.

Even if Messi transferred to the Premier League at a cost of £200 million, it would still be profitable

$

Messi

Speculation over whether Lionel Messi will head to the Premier League never ends. Fans would love to see Messi's Argentine wizardry grace the stadiums of England and Wales.

According to the Manchester Evening News, three unidentified European football clubs, one of which is likely to be Manchester City, have carried out a study to see whether the millions they would have to pay to pull Messi from the Spanish club FC Barcelona would be worth it.

Messi would probably cost about £190 million ($285 million) to sign, according to rumours in the football press. His contract has a £205 million ($308 million) release clause. That's more than double what Real Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 (£80 million). The football transfer record is £85 million ($127 million), when Gareth Bale joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

But even at about £200 million, a Messi transfer to the Premier League would still most likely be profitable, according to the study by the sports marketing agency Euromericas. The company says Messi should be valued in excess of €400 million, or about £300 million ($450 million), in terms of the total revenues he can generate.

"This figure is the result of the sum of the market value of the player, valued 163.2 million; the effect of the marketing (131 + 36 million) and, finally, the media impact (advertising), valued at 70 million. Behind the footballer are Adidas, Pepsi, Dolce & Gabanna or Lay's." Euromericas reports.

RTR3C6KE

Lionel Messi was already rated the most valuable player in the world. Messi scores more than 30 goals a season in league play, so any team that plays him will most likely see its trophy revenue rise as well. He can score 50 goals a season in all contests. The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) Football Observatory conducted a study that used an algorithm based on 1,500 transfers between clubs since 2009. It determined than Messi outranked all others by a significant margin.

Simply, the 27-year-old is marketing gold: He would sell shirts; fill stadiums; and boost interest abroad and help stimulate excitement on world tours. Also, probably most importantly of all, Messi would put people in front of the TV. The last international rights sale for the Premier League topped out at £2 billion— Messi would increase that. The new domestic broadcasting rights deal for the Premier League is bigger than every other: a staggering £5.1 billion ($7.6 billion). In financial terms, no other country can compete.

According to Deloitte, every Premier League club is in the top 40 in global revenue rankings for football teams.

6180807938_3682966998_o

But the Manchester Evening News suggests that despite all that, the Premier League still lacks the one thing it really needs: one of football's top players, Messi or Ronaldo.

Manchester City isn't the only English club that might stump up the huge transfer fee for Messi. Chelsea has been linked to him, too. Each would have to navigate through football's restrictions on financial spending, but Manchester Evening News points out that, with increasing commercial revenue, City could stand an improved chance. With Chelsea it's more unclear.

6181107988_8856f3c3d0_o

Spending £190 million on one player sounds unbelievable, but with Messi it could actually be profitable. After Real Madrid bought David Beckham for £25 million in 2003, the club sold 1 million shirts— jerseys cost about £50 ($75) (often more), so that alone would have paid for him.

Here's Messi turning it on:
